Joseph Kosuth. ›Non autem memoria‹

Art as Idea as Idea—is a simple yet far-reaching principle that Joseph Kosuth (b. 1945 in Toledo, Ohio) established in the 1960s and that determined his artistic path from then on. Kosuth is considered an important representative of American Conceptual Art. In this art movement, the idea involved in the work of art is of central importance. Words and language are the primary artistic means used realizing a work.

Stuttgart was an important platform for Joseph Kosuth in the 1980s and 1990s. He was present in the city with numerous exhibitions and taught at the State Academy of Fine Arts from 1991 to 1997. The Kunstmuseum Stuttgart has an outstanding collection of Kosuth’s work—the largest in Germany. To mark his eightieth birthday, the Kunstmuseum is presenting a room of works from the collection curated by the artist and by Ulrike Groos, Director Kunstmuseum Stuttgart.
