From Work to Display

How can the unique quality of works of art be conveyed in digital space? The Kunstmuseum Stuttgart and the Kunsthalle Mannheim explored this question in the joint, multi-year research project “From Work to Display”. Episodes were developed for 22 works of art from both collections, which pursue new, experimental approaches to communication in the digital space. A direct comparison between the original and the digital translation is possible on site in the museums.

For example, visitors can interactively explore the interplay of color, form and contrast in the painting “The Bach Singer” by Johannes Itten. The figures in Otto Dix's triptych “Großstadt” are brought to life virtually and tell of the events depicted from their own perspective. Individual elements from Mona Ardeleanu's paintings can be combined on a digital artboard to create your own collages and new works of art.

At the Kunstmuseum Stuttgart, there are also episodes on works by Willi Baumeister, Hanne Brenken, Rebecca Horn, Wolfgang Laib, Josephine Meckseper, Dieter Roth and Mirja Wellmann.
