Closure of Kunstmuseum Stuttgart
from 13 April 2026
The Kunstmuseum Stuttgart closing its doors? Say what? Not permanently—just for a time, to carry out urgently needed building works.
Since its opening in 2005, the museum has been in continuous operation. Now, with shifting technical standards and the natural wear of time, comprehensive upgrades have become inevitable. To ensure that exhibitions can continue to be presented under optimal conditions, modernization work will take place in several key areas—particularly in lighting, fire detection system, and flooring. Because such works cannot be performed alongside regular exhibition activity, the museum will remain closed until early 2027.
Yet even during construction, the Kunstmuseum Stuttgart will maintain a visible presence. From 18 April 2026, the Kunstgebäude on Schlossplatz—the very building that housed the City of Stuttgart’s collection from 1961 to 2005—will host the exhibition “The Cold Heart.”
The CUBE restaurant, o.T. Bar Lounge, and Walther König bookstore will also remain open throughout the closure, though opening hours may vary.
